Utilize your phone or tablet with the help of switches or the front camera. Switches enable you to choose items, scroll, input text, and perform various actions.

Switch Access allows you to interact with your Android device using one or multiple switches, offering an alternative to direct touchscreen engagement. This feature is particularly beneficial for users who may have difficulty with traditional interactions.

Getting started is simple:

  1. Navigate to your device's Settings app.
  2. Select Accessibility > Switch Access.

Setting up a switch

Once you configure a switch, Switch Access will scan the items displayed on your screen, highlighting each option until you make a choice. You can select from various switch types:

  • Physical switches:
    • USB or Bluetooth switches, such as buttons or keyboards.
    • On-device switches, like volume buttons.
  • Camera switches:
    • Facial gestures like mouthing, smiling, or raising your eyebrows.
    • Looking left, right, or upward.

Scanning your device

After switch setup, you can easily scan and interact with items on your screen. Various scanning methods include:

  • Linear scanning: Navigate between items sequentially.
  • Row-column scanning: Scan through one row at a time, then browse through the selected row's items.
  • Point scanning: Use intersecting lines to pinpoint a specific location on the screen, then press 'Select'.
  • Group selection: Assign switches to different color groups. Each screen item will display a color. Activate the switch for the color corresponding to your desired item and systematically reduce the group size until you reach your selection.

Employing the menus

When you select an element, a menu will appear showcasing available actions such as selecting, scrolling, copying, pasting, and more. Additionally, a menu will be accessible at the top of the screen to help you navigate your device, including features like opening notifications, returning to the home screen, adjusting the volume, and other options.

Navigating with Camera Switches

Camera Switches enable you to control your phone using facial expressions. You can browse or select apps via your phone’s front camera. Moreover, the sensitivity and duration of each gesture can be adjusted to suit your preferences.

Recording shortcuts

Touch gestures can be recorded for assignment to a switch or initiated from a menu. These gestures may encompass actions such as pinching, zooming, scrolling, swiping, double tapping, and others. With a single switch, you can initiate frequent or intricate actions, like recording a gesture that swipes left twice to navigate through two pages of an eBook.
